Medicare Term

Definition

Prescription drug coverage available through private plans approved by Medicare.

Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage through private insurance companies. You can get Part D coverage through a standalone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) with Original Medicare, or through a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage (MA-PD). Each plan has its own formulary (list of covered drugs), and costs vary by plan, pharmacy, and medication tier.
